Mahinga kai refers to the traditional Māori food gathering practices and the areas where these activities take place. This concept encompasses not just the physical act of collecting food but also the spiritual, social, and cultural elements that come with it.
Last year, we worked with Hokonui Runanga to create some toi for the Gore District Council. The aim was to represent Hokonui whānau's distinct food-gathering practices and present this within Gore District Council's brand-new library.
Each piece of artwork signifies a different realm within the Taiao. Various motifs represent the prominent beings and elements within that realm. The rings that flow from one artwork to the next symbolise the interconnectedness of these natural realms.
